Gov. Parnell's Official Proclamation for Alaska Book Week!

Governor Sean Parnell has officially proclaimed that October 4-11 is Alaska Book Week! Below is the wording of the proclamation, along with a link to it housed in the Governor's Office website.

WHEREAS, Alaska has a large and ever growing community of writers and body of literature; and

WHEREAS, literature about Alaska and her people impart great knowledge to the world about our extraordinary state and preserve our unique heritage; and

WHEREAS, Alaskan authors ignite our imaginations, illustrating the vibrancy and wonderment of Alaska, inspiring readers to experience our state’s rich cultural traditions, history, and magnificent wilderness and landscapes; and

WHEREAS, supporting local writers allows talented and creative professionals to remain in Alaska and strengthens and diversifies our economy; and 

WHEREAS, dramatic changes in publishing and bookselling and the digitalization of media have increased the need to recognize the importance of local writers and the value of Alaskan literature; and

WHEREAS, Alaska Book Week is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate Alaska’s remarkable storytellers and the many books that expand our horizons, give us the ability to discover new places, visit the past, and bring us joy.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sean Parnell, Governor of the State of Alaska, do hereby proclaim
October 4-11, 2014 as:

Alaska Book Week

in Alaska, and encourage all Alaskans to celebrate Alaska’s authors and books by participating in statewide events such as book clubs, author readings, storytelling, and library visits; and to mentor and instill in our youth a passion for reading.
